An Introduction to “The Vampire Diaries”

July 14, 2009

This Fall we’re getting a new vampire show on the CW: The Vampire Diaries. As a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan, I couldn’t help but be intrigued.  Unfortunately, there is no vampire slayer, but the main character is not as insipid as Bella Swan.  It is based on a series of books by L.J. Smith that bears some similarities to Twilight, but these were written first (1991).  Four books make up The Vampire Diaries series: The Awakening, The Struggle, The Fury, and Dark Reunion.  You can buy the books in two multi-volume editions on Amazon.  This year, Smith also released the first of a new trilogy: The Vampire Diaries: The Return.  I am reading the third book currently, and am enjoying it.  They’re clichéd, certainly, but enjoyable.  Also, no hidden Mormon subtext, just good old-fashioned teen romance.  Plus, the two vampire brothers are Italian, born in the Renaissance–love that!  I’m sure that I’m too old to be reading these books or watching the show, but whatever.  Teen drama is my weakness.  I have included an extended preview of the upcoming show below.  There are certainly some changes from the book, but they’re probably for the best.  Enjoy!

Update: If you want to read more about the show, the folks behind KryptonSite.net, HeroesSite.net, etc. have launched http://www.vampiresite.net/.  Check it out to read a review of the pilot.

Also, another great site for detailed coverage of the upcoming show is Vampire-Diaries.net.
