Read on for Johnni’s recap of episode 2×02 of Nashville, aired Wednesday, October 2nd, 2013:

This week’s episode begins with Juliette trying to promote her new album on Conan, but all anyone wants to talk about is how Rayna is doing after her accident. Not so surprisingly, Juliette is pissed. If her self-imposed pressure isn’t enough, Edgehill Records is under new management, and the new boss (a total jerk) is not impressed with her numbers.

Rayna tries to get back on her feet and decides to set up her meeting with the new owner, Jeff Fordham (played by Oliver Hudson); she shows him the two artists on her label, Scarlett and Will. Jeff was a total tool to Juliette, but now seems very accommodating and chummy with Rayna. A bit suspicious if you ask me!

Shortly after their group meeting, Jeff goes to see Will and tries to bring him onto the Edgehill label, and ultimately steal him from Rayna and her Highway 65 label—so terrible!

Meanwhile, in Alabama, Juliette is heading home to give CMT an inside look into where she came from. She brings Avery along for support, and gets teary-eyed when she runs into old neighbors. Side note: Juliette’s friendship with Avery is easily becoming one of my favorite parts of this season.

Back in Nashville, Scarlett is being her adorable self, taking care of Deacon despite his best efforts to sabotage his own recovery. After the crash and Rayna’s near death experience, Deacon is struggling with inner demons. He also discovers that his guitar-playing hand may never go back to normal, which sends him into an even deeper depression. After putting up with his doom-and-gloom attitude, Scarlett breaks and forces him to admit why he fell off the wagon. Deacon finally says it out loud; he found out that he is Maddie’s father and that Rayna had lied to him all these years. Needless to say, Scarlett is shocked.

As Deacon is struggling, he has nowhere to turn, so he reaches out to Rayna. She comes to see him at the site of their crash and gives him back the ring he proposed to her with many years prior. She is ready to move on and can’t do that if she stays with him. Poor Deacon, he just can’t catch a break!

Rayna leaves Deacon and heads home to Teddy, who has been staying at the house since her accident. She tells him that she is done playing house and that they need to get divorced as they initially planned. He looks thrown off, but let’s be honest: Teddy is not the right guy for her.

In a break from the sad tone that has been taking over this season, Gunnar debuts a new song at the Bluebird. His writer’s block has been broken and he can finally sing about the biggest loss in his life, the death of his brother. The song is fantastic and so touching, plus Gunnar is ten times hotter when he sings (just saying). [Editor’s Note: Math doesn’t lie.]

Towards the end of the episode, all of the Edgehill artists attend a party at the new owner’s house. When Rayna arrives, she discovers that Will has agreed to sign with Edgehill instead of with her, while Juliette gets a surprise of her own. The label has signed a new artist, Layla, who sings what Jeff wants and attracts the tween audience. Juliette has been replaced! Maybe Juliette will finally realize that Rayna was never her competition, but this girl definitely is. As Rayna sits back and watches the new path that Edgehill is going down, she turns to her manager and says maybe she should walk away from Edgehill all together.

At the same time, Deacon is at home with a saw. He cuts off his cast and tries to play guitar. I sure hope this means he isn’t giving up on music! Nashville without Deacon playing guitar? That is insane!

Tune in tonight, Wednesday at 10/9c, to see if Deacon can make a comeback, and if Rayna still has her voice. Plus, who does this new girl think she is? I can’t wait to see how Juliette takes her down a notch or two!
